Fort William Historical Park's leadership and position as a premier cultural attraction is evident from the many awards we have received in the areas of tourism, culture, education, hospitality, and economic development. We are proud that our commitment to quality in these areas has been recognized at the local, provincial, and national levels as we strive to reach people from across North America with our outstanding programs and services.
Some of our awards' highlights in the areas of heritage and culture include receiving the award of excellence in the category of "Best Developed Outdoor Site" by Attractions Canada in 2002 and being ranked as one of Canada's Top Ten Heritage sites by the Toronto Star newspaper. The Fort was thrilled that the City of Thunder Bay was awarded the Cultural Capital of Canada Designation in 2004 for Fort William Historical Park's Great Rendezvous Festival. The Great Rendezvous was a major annual event in Fort William's history when the voyageurs, Natives, and North West Company executives converged at the Fort with furs and trade goods to conduct business as well as relax and have a good time.
The Fort's collaboration with regional partners to promote tourism in Northwestern Ontario was recognized by the Canadian Tourism Commission in 2001 and 2002 for our "Winter in the Wild, Warmth in the City" and "Dog Days of Winter" vacation packages. The success of these partnerships, as well as Fort William Historical Park's diverse programming, is dependent on the enthusiasm, creativity, and hard work of our staff. The dedication of our former Special Events Coordinator, Susan Stupendick Mountstephen, is just one example of our staff's commitment to exceptional customer service. Stupendick Mountstephen was honoured with the Amethyst Award for Highest Achievement in the Ontario Public Service in 1996 for her accomplishments in educating and entertaining visitors to Fort William. The Fort looks forward to continuing to introduce visitors to a fascinating chapter in North America's history and developing ground-breaking approaches to tourism in Northwestern Ontario.
