Get pulled into the action! Experience the dramatic confrontation between two mighty rivals, the North West Company of Montreal and the Hudson’s Bay Company of England. Their violent struggle to dominate the North American fur trade has brought the Hudson’s Bay Company forces, led by Lord Selkirk, to Fort William’s gates. Re-enactors from Canada and the U.S. bring this gripping chapter of our history to life.

  • Battle demonstrations: Shots will be fired and the cannons will roar!
  • Visit with soldiers in their camp
  • Take aim with axe throwing
  • Fire a historic musket
  • Kids can take part in their own army drill and make crafts
  • Paddle a canoe along the Kaministiquia River
  • The drama unfolds throughout the day:
    • Be a part of the emergency meeting with the North West Company partners
    • Spy on the Nor'Westers as they burn documents
    • Join in the debate as the Anishinaabe decide their involvement in the upcoming battle
    • Help hide muskets and powder
    • Witness the arrival of Selkirk and his forces, a surgery, a battlefield demonstration and more!
  • Capture the Past - Dress up as a character from 1816 and take your picture in Fort William’s historic setting

Getting Here

Fort William Historical Park is located at 1350 King Road, Thunder Bay. Parking is free.

Thunder Bay Transit
Fort William Historical Park can be reached by taking Thunder Bay Transit Route #4, Neebing. The Neebing bus does not run on Sundays or Statutory Holidays.

Access by bike, boat or RV

  • Cyclists are welcome, bike racks will be available
  • Boats cannot dock at the event; there is no admissions entrance via the Kaministiquia River
  • RVs are only permitted in the parking lot for the duration of the event; overnight stay is only permitted in the campground with a registered campsite and a camping permit

  • Weather appropriate clothing

Food and Beverage

  • The Cantine Restaurant will be offering a full menu (Debit, Visa, MasterCard and cash are accepted)
  • Outside food and beverages are not allowed
    • In the case of dietary restrictions please contact the Visitor Experiences Coordinator at (807) 473-2357 to make alternate arrangements prior to event date
  • ATM available at the Visitor Centre
