The Wharf

The Wharf served as the docking area for loading and unloading company schooners and bateaux (rowboats), and a landing site for canoe brigades.

The loading and unloading process was assisted with the use of the wharf's crane. The crane operated on a rope and pulley system and was used for the heavier items such as barrels and fur packs. Without this tool it would have been very difficult to load and unload the large schooners and bateaux that arrived at the Fort.

The Wharf was also the place to greet arriving canoe brigades and Company partners. This ceremony, called an arrival, consisted of song, dance, a toast and a cannon and musket salute. Residence of the Fort and visiting partners gathered on the wharf to celebrate the safe arrival of their fellow comrades.
