North Rock Engineering is the proponent of Fort William Historical Park – Wharf Erosion Mitigation project, which is an erosion prevention initiative that involves the addition of rock-filled gabion baskets, to be constructed adjacent to the existing historic wharf at the south end of the park along the Kaministiquia River. No work will take place in the waterway as a part of the scope of this project, as all work will be done on the dry side of the wharf. The figure shows the project location and the work and study areas for the project.
The primary goal of the project is to extend the lifespan and mitigate the current erosion issues during the flooding of the Kaministiquia River during peak run-off seasons while preserving and celebrating its historical character and to improve the safety of staff and visitors at the park.
The project will result in an accessible and environmentally responsible workplace that will continue to serve as a critical tourist location for years to come. This initiative will also reduce the future possibility of erosion in the subbase layers underneath the wharf.
On behalf of North Rock Engineering, we have commenced a Category B Class Environmental Assessment of this project under the Government property Class Environmental Assessment.
A Class Environmental Assessment is a study that examines the potential environmental effects (positive and negative) of a proposed project and identifies ways to manage negative environmental effects before project implementation. A key component of the Class Environmental Assessment process includes consulting stakeholders. Consultation provides opportunities for members of the public to contribute to and influence decisions relating to a project.
