Canada Day at Fort William Historical Park

Friday, July 1st • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Remember, learn and engage this Canada Day at Fort William Historical Park. Come explore the Anishinaabe Encampment and Fort William to learn about and celebrate our nation’s diverse heritage. As we kick-off our summer season, there’s plenty to see and do! Test your aim with axe throwing, atlatl (spear throwing) and lacrosse (baggataway). Sample traditional foods including wild rice (manomin) and shortbread. Enjoy a variety of entertainment including live music, and historical songs, dances and re-enactments. Visit the farm animals, make crafts, get your face painted, and more!

Activities, Entertainment & Contests

Enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities and demonstrations including:

  • Visit the Farm animals
  • Butter churning
  • Wild rice (manomin) samples
  • Shortbread samples
  • Artisan Bread Sale - Starting at 1:30 p.m. in the Visitor Centre, as supplies last; $5 per loaf
  • Historical dramatic re-enactment - 3:00 p.m. The Betrothal followed by historical song and dance
  • Axe throwing
  • Spear throwing (atlatl)
  • Lacrosse (baggataway) - Games at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Fire a historic musket with the Canadian Corps of Voyageurs - 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., $3 per shot
  • Live music
  • Crafts
  • Face painting

*Activity schedules may change or be cancelled in the case of extreme weather conditions.

Food & Beverage

Lunch will be available for purchase in the Main Square of the historic site. Menu coming soon.

What to Bring

  • Bug spray & sunscreen – This event takes place outdoors and in all-weather conditions.
  • Cash – There is no ATM available.

Getting Here

  • Car – Fort William Historical Park is located at 1350 King Road, Thunder Bay. Parking is free.
  • Bicycle – Cyclists are welcome. Bike racks are available to use free of charge.
  • Thunder Bay Transit – Fort William Historical Park is part of the 4 Neebing bus route. Please visit the City of Thunder Bay Transit website for specific bus route information.
  • Boat & River Access – Boats cannot dock at events. There are no admissions via the Kaministiquia River.
  • RVs – RV and tent camping is permitted at our campground with a reservation. Call (807) 473-2344 to book your serviced, non-serviced, or on-site rental RV! RVs are not permitted in the parking lot for overnight stay.


Pets are welcome at Fort William Historical Park, however, we ask that you adhere to the following when your pet is on our property:

  • Pets are allowed at the campground and historic site but must be kept on a leash.
  • Pets are not permitted inside the Cantine Restaurant, Gift Shop, McGillivray’s Landing, or the Café Kam.
  • There is outdoor, pet-friendly seating available at the Cantine Restaurant.
  • Please clean-up immediately after your pet using a disposable bag and place it in an outdoor waste receptacle.
  • Service animals are allowed in all places to which the public is admitted.
