Discover Fort William on your own and enjoy a variety of scheduled activities taking place throughout the day.

Welcome to 1815! There is plenty happening at the Anishinaabe Encampment and Fort William, the North West Company’s inland headquarters and world’s largest fur trade post. Last admission is at 4 p.m.

Guided Tours

English Guided Tours: 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

French Guided Tours: 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Guided tours start at the Tour Shelter

Take a guided tour of Fort William led by one of its inhabitants. Guided tours last approximately 1.5 hours and are are available in English and French.

Drama: The Clerk's Dilemma

11:30 a.m.

Great Hall Veranda (20)

Join a new clerk and an experienced guide of the North West Company as they embark on a quest to locate an important trading ledger before Mr. Taitt discovers it is missing.

Paddle a Canoe

10:45-11:20 a.m. and 2:45-4:20 p.m.

Voyageur Encampment (38)

Explore the historic Kaministiquia River by canoe while voyageurs entertain you with songs and stories.

Axe Throwing (Ages 12+)

12-12:30 p.m.

Armourer’s Shop, Trades Square (36)

Try your hand at throwing a trade axe! Voyageurs and tradesmen spend their leisure time trying to best one another in this game of precision and skill.

Drama: The Arrival

2:30 p.m.

Wharf (39)

Celebrate the arrival of travellers and traders to Fort William with a traditional salute from the Fort’s inhabitants.

Skills of the Anishinaabe

Anishinaabe Encampment (1)

Come experience how the Anishinaabe live in harmony with Nimaamaa Aki (Mother Earth). Learn about the transition and melding of different tools and technologies through trade.

Fire a Musket (Ages 12+)

3-3:30 p.m.

Armourer’s Shop, Trades Square (36)

Firearms are an important trade item in 1815. Learn the skills you’ll need to use a fur trade era musket to hunt for your food.

Main Square

Join Fort William’s inhabitants as they celebrate with singing and dancing in the Main Square.

Meet our sheep, pigs, cows, and chickens on the Farm. Consider lending a hand, there are always chores to be done.

Proprietor of Fort William, Kenneth Mackenzie, receives a promotion and must relocate to Montreal. Will his wife, Louisa, and daughter go with him or choose to stay in the interior?
